And There It Is...

If anyone reading this is fucking stupid enough to believe that gasoline is $3.00 per gallon because of a) over consumption, b) refinery capacity, or c) hurricanes, I respectfully submit this photograph of ONE of the giant, palm-tree shaped, man-made islands in Dubai, Saudi Arabia.

Please think of the poor, starving Opec nations next time you fill up.

  • My dear, gasoline is $3.00 a gallon, because we agree to pay $3.00 a gallon. Just like we agreed to pay $500 a piece for those iPhones. Can't blame them for taking advantage of a free-market economy. *shrug* The price will come down when we find an alternative energy source, or choose to conserve.

  • Not true Beanie. Can you choose to no longer go to work? Can your husband? Can both of you decide that you're not paying $3 per gallon and stay home?

The reality is that prices began climbing far ahead of consumption. It was an "acid test" by the OPEC and the oil companies to see if we'd be willing (or forced to) pay for it. I already carpool to work and do almost no recreational driving. Hence, my consumption is as low as it can possibly be.

As for alternative energy, I'm all for it. The day we end our dependence on oil is the day that MANY countries in this world cease being relevant at all.

  • Well, then you're doing what you can. But for the rest of the country, driving their Hummers and their Ram trucks? It's going to take everyone, cheri. It's going to take a change in the administration, away from a cabinet of people who, to a person, are invested heavily in oil stocks; it's going to take mandated investment in public transportation; it's going to take an acceleration in implementing the new CAFE standards.

It'll take time. But it'll happen.

And you never want to make a country irrelevant...irrelevant people become desperate people, and desperate people commit crimes...sometimes on a tragic and monumental scale. But you do want to "encourage" a simpler lifestyle. ;)

    Peace.
