I'm A Doctor, Not A Digital Producer Jim
A friend of mine told me about this file on youtube.com today. Essentially, some has taken Classic Star Trek and redone the SFX shots using digital techniques. Hell, Lucas did it so why not Rodenberry? :)
It's very cool, and they used one of my favorite episodes. Check it out here.

Because it was wrong when Lucas did it, that's why. They should turn their awesome talents toward making something new.
Thank God it's still shaped like a giant Bugle.
I do believe that miniskirt was even shorter than before, CGI is amazing!

I actually saw this when in the year indicated in the copyright, 2003. This was leaked (perhaps deliberately) from a small special FX house that was trying to sell Paramount on the idea that episodes of the original Trek could be updated for a "modern audience." They deliberately picked an iconic and especially memorable episode of the show, and put together a pitch that showed how they'd handle most of the regular gags -- the Enterprise in "flight," the transporter, etc.
I'd heard the idea ultimately got shot down because it was not cheap enough to produce the new effects, nor could they be created fast enough.
But since it didn't come to pass anyway, once can look through rosy glasses and hope that artistic integrity and "not messing with a classic" had something to do with it.

I'm not a big fan of redoing classics, but I think I would really enjoy seeing a few episodes enhanced this way. Obviously, they would be the "space heavy" episodes like:
The Doomsday Machine
Balance of Terror
and most certainly, The Tholian Web.
